4 Core Skills for Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, understand, use, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict. It reflects abilities to join intelligence, empathy, and emotions to enhance thought and understanding of interpersonal dynamics. Here are four core skills to mastering emotional intelligence.



Self-awareness

The ability to recognize and understand your own emotions, how they affect your thoughts and behavior, and how you impact those around you.

Self-management

The ability to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage your emotions healthily, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Social awareness

The ability to understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of others, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.

Relationship management

The ability to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.

My summary

Emotional intelligence is essential to how one may process their emotions in positive ways to go past moments of hardships and tougher situations. The four core skills of self awareness, self management, social awareness and relationship management are the key to mastering emotional intelligence. Having these four skills allows one to connect intelligence, empathy, and emotions to have a greater understanding of those around us.
