The Art of the 1:1 Meeting: A Masterclass in Leadership

Welcome to the cozy corner of leadership with brandON —a space where insights percolate, and the aroma of success is as invigorating as your morning cup of coffee. Today, we're brewing up some wisdom on how to conduct a 1:1 meeting that doesn't just tick the boxes but truly transforms both you and your amazing team.

Whether you're guiding the ship of a bustling café, crafting culinary experiences in a restaurant, or innovating in a small business, these intimate check-ins are the secret ingredient to a thriving team culture.

My name is brandON Ivan Pena, I am the CEO and co-founder of 787 Coffee - a from farm to cup coffee experience, with coffee shops in Puerto Rico, New York, and El Paso, TX.  A coffee farm in Maricao Puerto RIco.  Leading one of the fastest growing coffee companies in the americas alongside 200+ amazing humans.

In this blog I will share some of my insights on how to conduct a successful 1:1 meeting with your team.  It works for our team, hope it works for you.

Here's how to master the blend:

1. Steep Your Meetings in Data

Begin your 1:1s with a rich infusion of data. This isn't about drowning in numbers but savoring the nuanced flavors of individual performance, project progress, and business outcomes. Just as you wouldn't judge a coffee solely by its aroma, assess team members on a comprehensive palette of metrics and milestones. This grounds your discussion in reality, setting the stage for meaningful conversations.

2. Foster Clear Communication: The Heart of Leadership

Clear communication is the crema on your espresso – it makes all the difference. Engaging in open, honest dialogues where both parties can share thoughts and concerns freely is akin to perfecting the roast of your beans: essential. Encourage your team to express themselves and listen with the intent to understand, not just respond. This builds trust and ensures you're both on the same page.

3. Nurture Growth with Training and Development

Your team's development should be like coffee cultivation—constantly nurtured and attentively cared for. Identify areas for growth and co-create personalized development plans. Whether it's skill-building workshops, cross-training, or leadership pathways, invest in their potential. After all, a team that grows together, stays together.

4. Craft an Action Plan

Every good brew needs a recipe, and every effective 1:1 requires an action plan. Together, pinpoint specific, actionable steps to tackle before your next meeting. These milestones will act as your roadmap, directing your collective efforts toward shared goals. And remember, the best plans are flexible, allowing room for adjustments based on new inputs or shifts in priority.

5. Serve Updates Generously

Keep your team informed. Regular updates ensure everyone is aligned and moving in harmony towards the end goal, just like a well-choreographed dance in a busy kitchen. These updates can be milestones reached, challenges faced, or simply recognizing a job well done. A little appreciation goes a long way in a robust blend of morale.

6. Summarize with a Follow-Up

Just as every coffee lover appreciates the perfect finish to their drink, ensure you conclude your meetings thoughtfully. A follow-up email or text summarizing key discussion points, agreed actions, and any support required reinforces commitment and ensures nothing gets lost in the daily grind.

To summarize...

Navigating through the nuances of a successful 1:1 meeting can be as complex and rewarding as mastering the art of coffee. It's about more than just following a process; it's about crafting experiences that enrich and fulfill. By incorporating these ingredients into your leadership brew, you'll foster an environment where individuals feel valued, understood, and invested in the collective vision.
